How to register an SMS sender ID in Ghana

A sender ID is the name recipients see instead of a phone number — up to 11 characters, such as your church, school or business name. In Ghana it must be approved by the mobile networks, which usually takes one to three business days.

Why a sender ID matters

A message from “GHAMSU” is opened; a message from an unknown number is often ignored or reported as spam. The sender ID is the single biggest trust signal in an SMS, because it is what the recipient sees before they read a word of the message. For any organisation sending to people who did not save its number, a branded sender ID is the difference between a notice being read and being dismissed.

How to choose a sender ID

  • Use your real organisation name. Networks check that the name matches the entity requesting it.
  • Stay within 11 characters, including spaces. Shorten deliberately rather than letting it be truncated for you.
  • Make it recognisable at a glance. An abbreviation your members already use beats a clever new one.
  • Avoid generic words like Info, Alert, Verify or Notice — these are heavily abused and routinely rejected.
  • Never imitate another brand, especially a bank or a network. This is rejected and can put your account at risk.

How to register a sender ID on WHISPER

  1. Open Sender IDs in the dashboard sidebar.
  2. Click Request Sender ID.
  3. Enter the name you want recipients to see, up to 11 characters.
  4. Give a short, specific business reason — for example “service and dues reminders to registered members of our church”. Vague reasons are the most common cause of delay.
  5. Submit. The request goes to the networks for approval, and you can track its status on the same page.

How long does approval take?

Approval usually takes one to three business days. The review is performed by the mobile networks (MTN, Telecel, AirtelTigo), so the timeline is not something any SMS platform controls. Requests submitted late on a Friday will generally be reviewed the following week.

What to do while you wait

You can set everything else up in the meantime: upload contacts, build groups, write and save templates, and buy credits. Only the actual send requires an approved sender ID, so a pending request need not hold up your preparation.

Common reasons sender IDs get rejected

  • The name does not match the requesting organisation
  • It resembles a bank, network or well-known brand
  • It is a generic term such as Info, Alert or OTP
  • The stated use case was too vague to assess
  • It exceeds 11 characters

A rejection is not permanent. Adjust the name or sharpen the business reason and resubmit — most second attempts succeed.

Sender ID questions

What is an SMS sender ID?

An SMS sender ID is the name recipients see as the sender of a text message, instead of a phone number. It can be up to 11 characters, including letters, numbers and spaces, and is typically an organisation's name or a recognisable abbreviation of it — for example a church, school or business name.

How long does sender ID approval take in Ghana?

Sender ID approval in Ghana typically takes one to three business days. The request is reviewed by the mobile networks, not by WHISPER, so the timeline is outside the platform's control. You can keep using the platform while a request is pending, and you'll be notified once the sender ID becomes active.

How many characters can a sender ID be?

A sender ID can be up to 11 characters. This is a global GSM standard, not a WHISPER limit, so it applies to every provider. Longer organisation names must be shortened — 'Grace Baptist Church' might become 'GraceBaptC' or simply 'GraceBC'.

Why was my sender ID rejected?

Sender IDs are usually rejected for one of four reasons: the name doesn't match the organisation making the request, it impersonates another brand or a bank, it's a generic word likely to be abused (such as 'Info', 'Alert' or 'Verify'), or the stated business purpose was too vague. Resubmitting with your registered organisation name and a specific description of how you'll use it usually resolves it.

Can I use more than one sender ID?

Yes. An account can hold several approved sender IDs, and you choose which one to send from on each campaign. This is useful when one organisation runs distinct communication streams — for instance a school using its main name for parent notices and a separate ID for its alumni association.

Can recipients reply to a sender ID?

No. Alphanumeric sender IDs are one-way by design — a recipient cannot reply to a name, only to a number. If you need replies, include a phone number, WhatsApp line or short link in the message body so recipients know how to reach you.
